This policy explains how the Screenlater iPhone app (“Screenlater”, “the app”), developed by Dmitrijs Juskovs (“I”, “me”), handles your information. In short: by default your pictures and screen content are processed on your iPhone. Content leaves your device only when you choose a cloud translation option, and then only to translate it.
You choose the translation engine in Settings. New installations start with on-device text recognition and translation. Screenlater never switches to a cloud option on its own.
| Option | What is processed | Where |
|---|---|---|
| On-device translation (default) | Picture or screen content and recognized text | On your iPhone, using Apple’s built-in text recognition and Translation features. Language downloads are handled by iOS. |
| Apple Intelligence — on device | Recognized text and its layout context | On your iPhone. |
| OpenAI with your own API key | Recognized text and layout context, or — in “Whole image” mode — the picture or selected screen area | Sent directly from your iPhone to OpenAI using your key. I do not receive it. Your use is governed by your agreement with OpenAI and OpenAI’s privacy policy. |
| Screenlater managed translation (subscription or trial allowance, where offered) | Recognized text and layout context, or the picture/screen area in image mode | Sent through the Screenlater server (hosted on Cloudflare) to OpenAI for translation, then returned to your iPhone. Screenlater does not write translation content to its billing database or error logs. Completed results may remain in server memory for up to five minutes for interrupted delivery. Where Cloudflare AI Gateway is used, streamed events may also remain available for a few minutes for stream recovery. |
Requests to OpenAI are made with response storage turned off. Cloudflare and OpenAI operate under their own privacy and data-retention policies (Cloudflare, OpenAI), which may include limited retention for security and abuse monitoring.
Live translation uses iOS screen broadcasting, which you start and confirm yourself. Captured frames are processed in memory to recognize and translate text. Recent screens and their translations are cached in memory during a session so unchanged screens are not translated again; this cache is discarded when the broadcast ends. A small preview image used by the floating window is kept temporarily in the app’s private storage on your device.
This data stays on your device and is removed when you delete the app (Keychain items may persist until you remove them through iOS).
Purchases, the free trial and subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. I do not receive your name, Apple Account, payment details or contact information. When you request managed allowance verification or use managed translation with a subscription or the free trial, the app sends Apple’s signed transaction record to the Screenlater server. The server verifies it with Apple to apply your allowance. The trial allowance is granted once from the original verified trial purchase; restoring or reinstalling does not restart it. Starting the free trial never automatically purchases a paid subscription.
The managed service stores records when it verifies a trial or subscription, processes allowance requests or receives related App Store notifications. On-device translation does not send your translation content to this service. Service records include:
The current service has no automatic deletion schedule for financial and idempotency records, including allowance periods, request accounting and processed-notification identifiers. These records are currently retained indefinitely to preserve balances, prevent repeat grants and resolve billing issues. No shorter automatic deletion period is currently implemented.
Where data protection laws such as the GDPR apply, processing for translation is based on your request to provide the service, and billing records on the performance of the contract and legal obligations. You can ask for access to, or deletion of, data associated with your managed trial or subscription by emailing me. Because no name or email is stored in the ledger, include the product and approximate purchase date to start the request. Those details alone do not establish ownership; further verification may be needed. Do not email API keys, signed purchase records or private keys. There is currently no automatic deletion flow. Any records that must be retained for an applicable legal obligation or to prevent duplicate credits will be explained when handling your request. You may also contact your local data protection authority.
Screenlater is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
